HSMAI FOUNDATION SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAM
The HSMAI Foundation, which has been providing scholarships to students pursuing a career in hospitality sales and marketing since 1983, awards merit scholarships to full-time students in the Baccalaureate/Graduate Degree Candidate category, and merit scholarships to part-time students pursuing Associate, Baccalaureate or Graduate Degrees. Graduate students will also be considered for the new HSMAI Foundation Mike Dimond Scholarship, which has been established to carry on the legacy of this hospitality sales and marketing giant who passed away in 2008.
The 2009 HSMAI Foundation Schoalrship program is currently accepting applications. The deadline is June 15, 2009. For eligibility, students must be enrolled in a hospitality management or related curriculum and pursuing a degree, have demonstrated hospitality work experience, possess an interest in a career in hospitality sales and marketing, and be in good academic standing.

HSMAI FOUNDATION ANNOUNCES RECIPIENTS OF 2008 SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAM
Five students pursuing careers in hospitality sales and marketing have been awarded scholarships from the Foundation of the Hospitality Sales & Marketing Association International (HSMAI). Sponsored by American Express, the merit scholarships have been awarded to full-time students in the Baccalaureate and Graduate Degree Candidate category.
The 2008 recipients are:
Kristin Bartholomew will receive her Bachelor of Science in Hotel, Restaurant, and Institutional Management from the University of Delaware in May, 2009. She has worked in hospitality positions since 2004. Her experience includes sous chef, restaurant supervisor, and server at various restaurants and at Six Flags, a management training intern at Courtyard by Marriott, and a rooms intern at Sheraton Suites Wilmington. She is currently the president of HSMAI’s student chapter at the University of Delaware.
Roland Bbalo will receive his Bachelor of Science in Hospitality Management from Drexel University in the summer of 2009. His hospitality experience includes night auditor at The Union League in Philadelphia, sales coordinator and guest services agent at the Omni Hotel and guest services agent at the Latham Hotel, both in Philadelphia, and a management trainee at two Ramada properties in Colorado and Kansas. He is a member of HSMAI.
Benjamin Garcia expects to earn his Bachelor of Science in Sports and Entertainment Event Management at Johnson & Wales University in Denver, Colorado in February, 2011. He is a Certified Professional Wedding Planner and has worked as a wedding planner for Memento & Co. in Austin, Texas, and as a customer relationship manager for several companies. He is an HSMAI member.

Karen Hsu holds a BA with Honors from the College of Communication Arts & Sciences at Michigan State University and expects to earn her MBA in Marketing & Hospitality Business from Michigan State in May 2009. She has worked as an account manager for Starwood Hotels & Resorts and as an account executive for Foote, Cone & Belding, a global advertising agency. She is president of the HSMAI student chapter at the University and a Habitat for Humanity Global Village volunteer.

Marla Juarez will receive her Bachelor of Science in Business Administration from the University of Texas at San Antonio in May, 2009. Her major is in marketing with a tourism concentration. She is currently an intern at the Westin Riverwalk in San Antonio, has been an intern and a customer services representative at the Omni Hotel in Austin, Texas, and has worked as a hostess at Pesca On The River in San Antonio. She is the secretary of the HSMAI student chapter at the University.
